Trips are planned for all day unless otherwise noted, so bring a lunch.
Anyone leaving the group early is asked to please notify the leader.

Trip: Daniel Webster Wildlife Sanctuary Date: Saturday, August 30, 2008, 8:00 a. m., Morning Leader: Glenn d'Entremont Meeting:Parking area of DWWS, Marshfield Notes: A leisurely walk looking for migrants.

Trip: World's End - Hingham Date: Saturday September 13, 2008, 8:00 a. m., morning Leader: Helen Harris-Cross Meeting:Parking area at World's End ($5 fee for non-trustees members) Notes: A fun walk through picturesque trails looking for migrants and residents. Trip: Fall Round-up Trip Results Date: Saturday, September 20, 2008 Leader: Glenn d'Entremont Meeting:Please contact coordinator for areas to cover and to join a team Notes: Join the club for its long term survey of the South Shore. You can make a difference, even if you can bird for a only a few hours, but we know you want to bird all day! Meet afterwards at South Shore Sanctuaries office in north Marshfield for pizza and to tally with the other teams. Trip: Great Pond, Randolph Date: Wednesday, September 24, 2008, 5:30 p. m. Evening Leader: Glenn d'Entremont Meeting:Lantana parking area behind the Holiday Inn. We will car pool and go to Great Pond where we hope to locate dabbling and diving ducks. Caspian Tern a possibility as well as shorebirds if water levels are low.

October Trips

Trip: Great Pond, Randolph Date: Wednesday, October 1, 2008, 5:30 p. m. Evening Leader: Glenn d'Entremont Meeting:Lantana parking area behind the Holiday Inn. We will car pool and go to Great Pond where we hope to locate dabbling and diving ducks. Caspian Tern a possibility as well as shorebirds if water levels are low. Trip: Outer Cape Cod Date: Saturday, October 11, 2008, 7:00 a. m. Leader: Glenn d'Entremont Meeting:Commuter parking lot, Rt 3 side of Sagamore Bridge, behind the Dunkin Donuts Originally designed for maximum sparrow species observation, this trip has produced an enormous variety of coast birds and fall migrants including shearwaters, rails (including yellow!), warblers, and some 18 species of sparrows. Trip: Mid-Cape Cod Community Gardens Date: Saturday, October 18, 2008, 8:00 a. m. morning Leader: David Clapp Meeting:Park & Ride at exit 10 on Route 6 (30 minutes from the Sagamore Bridge) We will bird the mid-Cape community gardens; Blue Grosbeak, Indigo Buntings, sparrows, Dickcissel Trip: Cumberland Farm Fields-Middleborough/Halifax Date: Sunday, October 19, 2008, 8:00 a. m. Morning Leader: Jim Sweeney Meeting:Gate to road into north end of fields on River Street, Halifax At this time of year, sparrows and their allies are migrating. The fields have been a haven for these little brown jobs as well as Dickcissel, Indigo Bunting, and Blue Grosbeak. Trip: Burrage Pond Wildlife Management Area Date: Sunday, October 28, 2008, 8:00 a. m. Morning Leader: Jim Sweeney Meeting:Elm Street entrance, Halifax. Waterfowl migration will be well underway and the nooks and crannies of Burrage Pond's waters should be full of ducks and geese. Walk the dikes with Jim.

Morning Leader: David Clapp Meeting:McDonalds on Route 28 about four miles from the Bourne Bridge Notes: We will bird the Falmouth area looking for coastal arrivals and good birds of the thickets- maybe a chat. Trip: Plum Island & vicinity Date: Saturday, November 8, 2008, 8:00 a. m. Leader: Mike Emmons Meeting:Lot 1 parking area, Plum Island, Newburyport Notes: Late migrants, wintering ducks, and raptors. Trip: Lakeville Ponds Date: Sunday, November 9, 2008, 8:00 a. m. Morning Leader: Jim Sweeney Meeting:Dunkin Donuts parking area, Rt 18 in Lakeville, just north of the ponds Notes: Waterfowl & eagles should be settling in for the winter or just moving through. Trip: Ducks of Straits Pond-Cohasset Date: Saturday, November 15, 2008, 8:00 a. m. Morning Leader: Sally Avery Meeting:Meet at east end where Jeruselum Road and Atlantic Avenue intersect (Black Rock Beach) Notes: Lingering waterfowl and bay ducks plus other coastal birds Trip: Daniel Webster Wildlife Sanctuary Date: Sunday, November 16, 2008, 8:00 a. m. Morning Leader: Tim O'Neil Meeting:Parking area of DWWS, Marshfield Notes: Prime time for arriving raptors and maybe a shrike. Trip: Scituate coast Date: Saturday, November 22, 2008, 8:00 a. m. Morning Leader: Charlie Nims Meeting:Stop & Shop parking lot, Rt 3A, Cohasset Notes: Wintering waterfowl settling in. This is the time of year for "reverse" migrants; those southwestern waifs. Trip: Great Pond, Randolph Date: Sunday, November 23, 2008, 8:00 a. m. Morning Leader: Vin Zollo Meeting:Lantana parking area behind the Holiday Inn. Notes: We will car pool and go to Great Pond where we hope to locate dabbling and diving ducks. Snow Buntings and early winter finches possible. Trip: Leader's Choice-South of Boston Date: Saturday, November 29, 2008 Leader: Glenn d'Entremont Meeting:Call leader for meeting time and place. Notes: Glenn will look at the recent bird sightings and choose a venue. This is a good time to look for early wintering birds and lingerers.

Trip: Buzzards Bay Date: Sunday, January 4, 2009, 8:00 a. m. Leader: Kathleen Anderson Meeting:Benny's parking area, Rt 6, Wareham Notes: A look for wintering birds such as ducks, loons, grebes, and other ocean birds as well as semi-hardy lingerers like Hermit Thrush, Gray Catbird, and Eastern Towhee. Trip: Outer Cape Cod Date: Saturday, January 10, 2009, 8:00 a. m. Leader: Wayne Petersen Meeting:Commuter parking lot, Rt 3 side of Sagamore Bridge, now behind the Dunkin Donuts. Call ahead if the forecast is foreboding. Notes: Traditionally called the "Death March", the Race Point walk can be challenging, but rewards may include alcids, loons, white-winged gulls, seals, and maybe a coconut. Trip: Members Night, Potluck Supper & Annual Meeting Date: Saturday, January 17, 2009, 6:00 p. m. Meeting:First Parish Unitarian Church Hall, 24 River Street, Norwell Notes: Please bring your favorite main dish, salad or desert. Bring your electronic images to show during the members year in review, always a highlight. If you have never attended, this evening is quite entertaining. Think about bringing a guest! Trip: Plymouth Date: Sunday, January 18, 2009, 9:00 a. m. Leader: Jim Sweeney Meeting:Exit 5 rest stop, Rt 3 Notes: A search for the area's ducks and other wintering water birds. Trip: North Quabbin Date: Sunday, January 25, 2009 Leader: Ernie LeBlanc Meeting:Call for meeting time & place. Notes: Ernie will scout and the trip will go to places in the north Quabbin area with the most potential. Will look for wintering birds and winter finches. Trip: Plum Island & vicinity Date: Saturday, January 31, 2009, 8:00 a. m. Leader: Mike Emmons Meeting:Lot 1 parking area, Plum Island, Newburyport Notes: Join Mike as he searches for Snowy Owls, raptors, and shrikes, looking for those birds which dwell here in the dead of winter.

Trip: Gloucester and Rockport Date: Saturday, February 7, 2009, 8:30 a. m. Leader: Joe Kenneally Meeting:Friendly's, Route 128 rotary, Gloucester. Notes: Scan the rocky coastline for sea ducks, guillemots and maybe a puffin. Trip: Scituate to Plymouth Date: Sunday, February 15, 2009, 7:30 a. m. Leader: Glenn d'Entremont Meeting:Stop & Shop parking lot, Route 139 at Route 3, Pembroke Notes: A full day of exploring the thickets in Marshfield, then the coast from Scituate south to Plymouth to check out the ponds for wintering ducks, then ending the day standing on Fox Hill at DWWS for owls. 70 species is possible and who's left at the end of the day can tally over dinner. Trip: Southeastern MA Date: Saturday, February 21, 2009, 8:30 a. m. Leader: Wayne Petersen Meeting:In front of McDonald's at the Campus Plaza on Rt. 18 in Bridgewater Center Notes: Farms, Fields, and Forests: Exploring Late Winter Bird Life-February weather is highly variable: sometimes snowy, sometimes not; sometimes cold, sometimes mild. We will investigate a variety of South Shore habitats in an effort to see what species survived the winter, along with seeking signs of the vanguard of spring of spring migration.
